I’m so honored to have the opportunity to be here tonight. My mother, successful actor, and respected humanitarian Angelina Jolie began her escalation to fame from a very fledgling age. In the 1990s my mother really started to be recognized as a popular actress, winning a Golden Globe Award; her first award of many. My mother continues to be a devoted humanitarian since being appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency in 2001. She made worldwide headlines for her work to obtain aid for refugees in Darfur, Jordan and Cambodia; my childhood home. In 2002 my life was changed drastically. I was adopted from Cambodia and at the time I didn’t realise why, how, or what was happening, but now it’s something I’m eternally appreciative of. In 2005, when I was just three, my mother received the Global Humanitarian Action Award for her activism on behalf of refugee rights. She endures on her travels around the world still today, drawing attention to global issues, and we’re all so proud of what she has achieved and what she continues to achieve. One night at dinner it was mum’s first night back home in two weeks, and it was like she had never left. Of course we miss her when she’s gone; but we don’t get sad, because we know she’s out doing worthy things. Once at dinner she asked if we wanted her to stop going to such dangerous places, and I couldn’t think of an answer. She loves doing these things, and I love seeing her do things she loves, so I could never stop her from doing so. My mother says that she first became mindful of the extent of the problems people around the world face when she filmed Tomb Raider back in Cambodia in 2001. When I was around six years old I remember starting to become very inquisitive about where I came from and why I still wasn’t there.
