Gun control is the controversy covered in this CQR, it was published March 8, 2013. This article talks about why gun control should be stricter solely based on firearm related crimes. Just because firearm related crimes are what we hear about most often on the news it is not the worst thing that is happening in the world today. I understand that the school shooting are horrific, but having stricter gun control laws is not going to stop criminals and mentally unstable persons from getting access to these firearms. The first issue I came to in this article is if a ban on assault weapons reduce gun violence. In the article it is basically answered in there already by the author stating that most firearm related crimes occur with a handgun, so no I don’t think that banning assault weapons would do anything. The second issue that was brought up is about mandatory background checks of all gun buyers. In every store that sells firearms the employee must do a mandatory background check already, so again this is already enforced by store owners so that won’t do much to stop criminals from trying to purchase a firearm. A final issue that was written about in the article is state laws allowing citizens to carry concealed weapons. In this section of the article, it states that there is no state that does not allow concealed carry. This shows me that the issue of citizens all carrying around a firearm shouldn’t be that big of a concern because everyone who wants to carry a concealed firearm and can do so is already doing such. With the first significant event about gun control takes place after the Revolution it is clear that this has been a pressing issue for quite some time. The Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment specifically for this purpose, “It’s the right of the people to keep and bear Arms”.
