As a developing species, it is natural for human beings to grow and cultivate personal interpretations and perceptions of reality. It is true to say that based on aspects such as our surroundings and experiences, our realities, particularly as young adults, are shaped to suit what we wish to envision or understand to be true. This concept therefore justifies that we are drawn to see things differently depending on what appeals to us and what we comprehend. Michael Leunig’s collection of essays entitled The Lot, brings to light the theory that ‘we have fantasy and delusional versions of individuality’, suggesting that our perceptions of personal realities are based on understanding and what appeals to us as individuals. Leunig consistently highlights throughout his essays that modern society is in need of encouraging their various elucidations of realities and ideas. In a particular essay, ‘Mania posing as passion’, there is a major emphasis on the possibility of perceiving a single idea as two separate interpretations of reality. In the essay Leunig recalls an interaction he shared with an elderly man who had mistaken his tool shed for the church. After the exchange, Leunig goes on to describe how the shed has ‘the feel of a church’, highlighting that, although the two people presented a diverse view on the reality of the place, Leunig was able to alter his perception after being exposed to a separate interpretation.
