The story “Shiloh” was written by Bobbie Ann Mason. Shiloh, Tennessee is where a civil war battle had happened. It is now a big tourist attraction with monuments, a cabin with bullet holes, and a short film about the civil war and Shiloh. When you read the title, it makes you think that is what the story is all about. To my amazement the story is not really about Shiloh. The plot of “Shiloh” starts out with Norma Jean and Leroy who have been married for years. They were high school sweethearts, and Norma Jean had gotten pregnant, so then they got married. They were at a drive-in when the baby was four months old, and the baby was in the back seat sleeping. The baby had died from SIDS. They never got over the baby dying. Leroy became an over the road truck driver for fifteen years and he was always gone. Leroy had an accident in his truck and injured his leg badly. He has been home for four months. He is now aware of things that he did not see when he was gone. He realizes how much he had missed his wife. Norma Jean is used to being alone and likes it that way. Norma Jean keeps herself very busy, and, ever since Leroy was in physical therapy, she started working out to become fit. Even though now they are both at home, Norma Jean continues to keep a distance between her husband and their relationship. Leroy keeps trying to spend time with her. Mabel, Norma Jean’s mother, has continued to try to get Leroy and Norma Jean to go to Shiloh, Tennessee, which is where Mabel and Norma Jean’s dad went on their honeymoon. Leroy convinced Norma Jean to take a trip with him to Shiloh to work on their relationship, but she tells him she wants to leave him. He looked at the trip as a way to save the marriage, but the story ended with her wanting out of the marriage. The point of view is done third person, which is Leroy’s point of view. We get a limited view through his perspective of Norma Jean. We do not know really what she is th
