In the American colonies during the eighteenth century, colonists were now beginning to think different and were influenced by the ideas of prominent thinkers of this time period. The day in age was known as ‘’The Enlightenment’’ or the Age of Reason. One of the most influential if not the most influential person of this era was Benjamin Franklin. His story is brought to life through the autobiography of his life and the connections the novel had to the Enlightenment period. He embodied the theory of science and the way it could be used to advance living and to further progress mankind. During a point in time where the Church was the head of the society and the people of the society did not go against those rules set by the church, the enlightenment era came about and challenged the teachings of the church. Benjamin Franklin was an individual who grow up under structure and had set plans for his life by his parents whereas though they did not allow him to let his mind wander or venture out. Franklin would then set out to make the decisions for himself as the enlightenment period promoted individuals to behave in this manner. During his grammar school tenure, his intent was to go to church until suddenly he was taken from school to work with his father. Not intrigued by his father’s occupation as a soap and candle maker, his father notices his disconnection and his skill as writer so he puts Ben to work with his brother James whom is a printer. Ben soon realizes his skill as a writer and later becomes the head of his brother’s newspaper due to political reasons. After a later dispute with his brother, Ben takes off for New York City to look for work.
