Summary In the article of “The Problem: Discrimination”, the author illustrated about discriminations on women and minorities. At first, it talked about the doctrine of white supremacy used to be supporting institutional slavery. Until 1920, the Equal Rights were established and African Americans did not have to be slaves anymore. Towards the middle of the article, the author gave examples of Individual Discrimination. Individual discriminations are like “ Personnel officers whose stereotyped beliefs about women and minorities justify hiring them for low level and low paying jobs exclusively, regardless of their potential experience or qualifications for higher level jobs” (Rothenberg). Stereotyping that women and minorities are lesser than white people is considered discrimination. The author also explained and gave examples about organizational discrimination. Organizational discrimination is discrimination that is institutional like organized rules, policies, and practices. Structural Discrimination is not intended. For example, the government would think West Covina has a high crime rate because there are many Hispanics. These unintended discriminations are structural discrimination. The second article “My Black Skin Makes My White Coat Vanish”, written by Mana Lumumba-Kasongo illustrated his experiences in the emergency room. Kasongo has dark skin. He talked about his first time being an intern doctor, and had a African American patient. He introduced himself to his the patient he is Dr. Kasongo, but the patient still insist that he is not a doctor, which broke his heart. Four years later, he is a doctor. He we to a restaurant with his friend, and his friend suddenly fainted, which resulted that he has to help his friend. When people are calling for doctors, two white males came and took over of what Dr. Kasongo was doing because people thought he isn’t a doctor. Towards the end, he said that women have the same r
