There are disagreements everyday ranging from what color is better to which corporation can raise more money. Religion falls into this category. It is not so much a disagreement, rather a topic that is commonly discussed. One main way it is discussed is if gender affects religion and how. From the narrative by Margery Kempe, The Book of Margery Kempe shows of a woman’s religious practices through gender, matrimonial relationships, negotiation and prayer. To begin with, Kempe’s gender does in fact affect her religious practices. Females often have a more clear sense to be more religious than males. In general, women are more emotional than men. There are some men who fall into the emotional category, but they are able to suppress their feelings better than women. A religious person is able to reach into their mind and heart to find a deep connection with a greater power. In my opinion, emotions relate strongly to religion. Emotions spring from deep down inside and are released in many different ways. The spot that religion springs from also comes from the same spot where emotions are found. While giving birth, Davis states that Kempe sent for a spiritual advisor; in other words, a priest (993). In times of trouble, Kempe goes to a higher power for guidance. In order to ask for help from this ‘existence’, one has to be a true believer and have the emotions relating to religion. Just like finding their emotional state, men also have difficulty asking for assistance. It is their masculine duty to know the answer to everything and know how to do it. They cannot admit when they are wrong. It comes easy for a woman to reach inside and bring up the courage to ask for help. In Kempe’s case, not only is she asking for help, but she is also asking help from a greater power. Imagine a scenario where a woman receives an answer and benefits greatly from the results.
