A person having or exhibiting bad moral qualities such as corrupt and wickedness is known as evil. In other words, evil people have qualities to injure people. Since life is doubtlessly made up of many challenges and obstacles, when it comes to survival, most people may do evil things to last longer in their surroundings. Some people use cunning ways to prosper themselves, but they make the others fall in return. It is no wonder that people change when greed, anger, and egoism overwhelm their spirits. For example, military leader of Myanmar, Than Shwe put all the country’s wealth into his pocket and very little amount of revenue goes to the people. His greed and hunger for power led the country into failure. Burma was once one of the richest country in Asia fifty years ago but turned out to be included in the list of poorest countries in 2009(Woodsome, 2011). Basically, the evil dictator depredated not only the country’s wealth, but also the reputation of the country. Throughout the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, the writer, Khaled Hosseini depicts the human capacity for evil in Afghanistan society. Those evil actions are evident in Rasheed’s (antagonist of the novel) abuse on his wives; Mariam and Laila, the oppressive force of the Taliban, an Islamic extremist group and War occurring in Afghanistan. The capacity for human evil is considered in Rasheed’s character. In the novel, Rasheed is a widowed shoemaker, whose son and first spouse died, causing him desperate for love and offspring which he then married to 15-year-old Mariam. Initially after the marriage, he shows no sign of abuse but after days and months when Mariam has a miscarriage, his true character starts to reveal causing excessive beatings and verbal abuse on Mariam. When Mariam undercooks the rice, Rasheed does his first physical abuse on Mariam. “His powerful hands clasped her jaw. He shoved two fingers into her mouth and pried it open, then forced the cold, hard pebbles into it. Mariam struggled against him but he kept pushing the pebbles in, “now chew,” he said”. (Hosseini 110) The spousal abuse that Mariam had suffered explains the society of Afghanistan which as a great difference in gender equality. In their community, men are expected to overwhelm the households and manipulate them. In the same fashion, Rasheed tortured Mariam emotionally, making her feel stupid whenever she makes an error. “Who’s Karl Marxist? Rasheed sighed. you know nothing, do you? You’re like a child. Your brain is empty. There is no information in it.” (Hosseini 104) By looking at Rasheed’s action, not only women are subservient, they do not have much freedom in the house either. The way Rasheed treats to Mariam is like a slave, which he uses her only for pleasure, cooking, and domestic works and as a breeding machine. When she cannot bear children, his behavior changes and gives her more trouble and beatings. Hosseini exposes the readers to aware the discrimination and evil
