Karen was a happy, good student, a strong athlete and well-adjusted child with loving parents. She was in sixth grade when her perfect happy world began to unravel once she started a new school and her social structure become complicated she felt intimidated by her peers and with the sudden death of her dad all the foundations of her life began to crumble. The death of her dad was hard for her to cope with and as puberty took hold of her body, her safe life in which she once felt secure and confident no longer felt safe. Every morning before she got ready for school she would avoid looking at herself at the mirror and when she did she found herself pounding her abdomen with her fists because she felt disgusted by the way her stomach looked. All she could think of was how her body was getting fat and her desire to be thin and the pressure to fit in with her peers since nothing in her life seemed to be gong the right way. Having no control of her life, she began to practice restrictive eating and exercise, thinking if she was thin and looked perfect she would be happy and be accepted by her peers and have control of her life again. She believed the thinner she was the more love she would receive she would be more lovable so it started with losing five pounds, then ten. She started to feel like life was worth living again, like she was achieving something. She became addicted to losing weight and having the control of what she ate and how much and how much she worked out was what she needed. She was looking for organization and control of her life that had been thrown upside down. She had a daily calorie diary and was only allowed to have less than 250 calories. She starved herself for days. Sometimes all she had was a water bottle at meals. She had a restricted diet - she cut out all fat food, carbohydrates and dairy. She tried to control her body and at the same time she was suppressing her emotions. She was trying to protect herself
