Law enforcement was designed to keep our country safe; however, new coverage of police brutality is currently sweeping our nation. With the increase of technology, especially cell phone cameras, new videos of police violence are constantly emerging. Some people believe that it is the citizen’s own doing. While others agree that police officers overstep their power. With carrying a gun, comes an extreme amount of power and some of our police force is not up to the responsibility. A substantial amount of research agrees perhaps our law enforcement officers should not carry deadly weapons. Besides the large amount of funding that goes to providing every officer with a gun and sometimes several, officers have proven they are too irresponsible to handle one. News outlets of every kind as well as average citizens are reporting thousands of innocent lives taken by police. There are now entire websites dedicated to sharing the stories these victims. The government provides very little statistics about police related deaths. The little statistics they do provide are often vague and out of date. Besides the government providing very little information to the public, they also do very little to protect its citizens against such crimes. Different nations across the world don’t provide their average police officers with guns. These countries have developed specialized groups within their law enforcement agencies who responsible for their firearms. Research shows that these countries experience less police violence than the United States. By examining all of the information provided by this research, we can better understand this issue currently plaguing the nation. By understanding the problem within our country we will hopefully be able to begin to develop a solution. Regardless of who you are or where you live in America the police is a entity constantly present in all of our lives. This editorial documents different bad policing incidents. It tells two stories of two different people being gunned down by police in the United States. The author also critizes the two police department’s inability to diffuse the heated situations and instead just fuels the fire. The author then presents a couple different solutions to these policing problems including disarming some officers, forcing cops to wear cameras, and more training for officers.
