In Nicholas Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” he is not necessarily saying that Google is making us stupid, but the fact that there is so much going on on the computer screen, our brains are starting to function like it. We can’t stay focused on one topic and feel the need to be doing other things. Bruce Friedman, a person that Carr talked with, said “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print” (Carr 2). Carr also mentions, “The more they use the web, the more they have to fight to stay focused on the long piece of writing” (Carr 2). Instead of actually reading writing pieces to get the full meaning and taking in the information, people are just skimming the pages. On the internet, there is just too much going on and too much information at our fingertips that we can’t stay focused. We can be on one internet site, while looking at another, and yet another. We can be on Face book, while being on Twitter, while being yet on another site, it is very distracting. There are so many things to click on while being on the web and search engines have made it easy and faster to look up information. For instance, when you are typing something into the search bar on Google, there is a drop box giving you different things to choose from. Basically Google does the work for you. Carr said “shortcuts would give barred readers a quick taste of the day’s news, sparring them the ‘less efficient’ method of actually turning the pages and reading the article” (Carr 4). More people are looking to getting their news information either online or on TV now instead of actually reading the paper. People use the internet to obtain information more quickly and easier, rather the researching for books and articles in the library. Have people looked into the web to escape reading?
