Can you imagine spending about 10 to 15 hours a day in school and still studying later at home? This time is only for schoolwork and studying with no time for sports or afterschool clubs. This is how daily life looks like for most Chinese High School students. Students’ life in China is really different from students’ life in America because of the contrast in education systems. Today I’ll talk about the difference between education in America and in China. Before I came to America, I spent my first 14 years in China. My main reason for coming to America was for the education. Even though I’m Chinese, I prefer the American education system. China and the U.S. have extremely different educational traditions. First of all, the differences of the view of education and knowledge are the most obvious. Both educations express a different attitude towards knowledge. Chinese education expresses the “static accepted” of the knowledge, but American education express the “dynamics changing” of knowledge. Chinese education focuses on the accumulation of knowledge, students respect the knowledge and authority, the mastery of knowledge and inheritance, as well as the construction of knowledge. On the contrary, The United States is more focused on training the students’ capabilities to use knowledge, making students to question the knowledge and authority, developing critical spirit, expansion and creation of knowledge. American education is focus on the width and numerous, while Chinese education is focus on narrow and depth; American education is focus on developing students’ self-confidence, independence, self-reliance, while Chinese education students is focus on developing students’ rigorous, strict, rigorous spirit. From the perspective of the development of innovative capacity, students in Chinese is easy to indulge self-restraint, self control, and is fear of error, and used to stick to the specification.
