Although some may argue that women in the novel Fifth Business have more qualities to provide than just sexual behaviour to the opposite sex, the following points will prove how men only want girls because of sex. With that being said, how can we change the perspective of men to look at women in a more decent and respectable way? Unfortunately throughout the novel we openly see examples of women easily selling themselves for unnecessary intercourse. Firstly, at the beginning of the novel Mrs. Dempster cannot be found anywhere and everyone including Dunsten is on the search for her. They eventually find Mrs. Dempster in a gravel pit having intercourse with a tramp. Additionally, throughout the book Dunstan and Diana went through many conflicts as well. Dunstan ends up using Diana and eventually makes the decision of not continuing with the relationship. Lastly, Boy had many issues of being loyal to his wife Leola. He simply could not be tied down to one women and therefore used Leola and had broken ties with her as well. Since Mrs. Dempster committed such an unfaithful act she did get penalized for doing so. Mrs. Dempster is a daring woman to wander off into the gravel pit all by herself. People got worried where she was and started a search for her. “in that bleak, flat light we saw a tramp and a woman in the act of copulation. We can clearly tell Mrs. Dempster sold herself easily to a tramp who had nothing attractive about him but yet they indulged in intercourse with ease. She was immediately asked why has she committed this horrible act and at once replied “He was very civil, ‘Masa. And he wanted it so badly” (42). We can clearly tell the tramp only wanted sex from Mrs. Dempster and nothing else, symbolizing her to become a sex object for men. No tramps are ever civilized as they live in dirt holes which makes Mrs. Dempster’s answer really hard to believe. Dunsten was shocked himself how Mrs. Dempster could do this but he
