I have chosen to do racism for my social problem. Racism has been a serious issue amongst us for decades. Some seem to believe that this is no longer exist, but that is not so. Although we may not realize it, we face all types of racist people daily. Some people are better at hiding it then others. Today most people rely on the social media to keep us updated on almost anything that occurs around the world. The only problem is that the media does not highlight as many racist encounters, whether they are big or small. They strive to cover these things; which will only make matters worse in the future if we continue to be like the vast majority of people and ignore things that need to be taken more seriously! I chose the Non-Marxist Conflict Theory to help explain my issue since it focuses on values and ideals. One current event that I believe demonstrated racism is the death of a local African American high school student of Valdosta Georgia by the name of Kendrick Johnson. On January 11, 2013, Kendrick Johnson's body was found in a rolled up wrestling mat in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School. The first preliminary investigation and autopsy concluded that the death was accidental. His family did not believe that his death was accidental being that the story given to them by the authority was that a student climbed up to the top of a cluster of mats, where the student found Kendrick headfirst in the center of a rolled up wrestling mat, in the gym. They also argued that the reasoning behind Kendrick being rolled up inside the gym mat was because he had climbed on top of the gym mats to get his shoes, but somehow slipped inside of a mat and suffocated. This story did not seem to explain the cuts, bruises, head concussion, and other horrible things that were done to Kendrick’s body. Therefore the family had a private pathologist conduct another autopsy which concluded that he died from blunt force trauma. The incident was no longer an
