FUNCTIONALISM Functionalism is a structure for building theory that sees society as a complex system whose parts work together to encourage solidarity and stability. This approach looks at society through a macro-level position, which is a wide focus on the social structures that shapes our society as a whole. This approach looks at both social structure and social functions. Functionalism pertains to the society as a whole in terms and the essential elements, these elements consists of norms, traditions, values, and institutions. In the 2004 documentary on Wal-Mart, “Low Prices High Cost” has shed a new perspective on the function of a world wide billion dollar industry, allowing us to view how the elite carry their power using social stratification to evolve numerous societies around the world. This Billion dollar industry has proclaimed it's empire where ever it need be, the vast corporation has demolished its competition, knocking out many “moms and pops” business, leaving them out to dry! For every Wal-Mart that is built, dozens of companies are forced to close down. The majority of residents have welcomed Wal-Mart with open arms, these residents are eager to see what they can gain, it goes beyond of how much one can save, the opening of a Wal-Mart will provide hundreds of jobs and opportunity in the community. Wal-Mart industries has held a respectable reputation, it is an all around American corporation, as the CEO Lee Scott would explain, Wal-Mart has high standards, this corporation strives to be about their employee's, “making a difference in people's lives, careers that are made, job's that come with opportunity and personal development”. As a Wal-Mart employee one is able to reach for the sky in advancement, receiving affordable health insurance, and offering full time work to provide a better life for one's family.
