Although Mia Thermopolis appears as an ordinary 15-year-old, in the film The Princess Diaries, Mia has a greater call in life, which is displayed through the cycle of the hero. Mia lives in San Francisco with her artsy single-mother, Helen. At her high school, she is a social outcast along with her two best friends, Lilly and Lilly’s brother, Michael. Her friend group consists of a perfect unity of 3 people. Mia secretly aspires to become popular and to kiss the boy of her dreams, Josh Bryant. Just as her 16th birthday approaches, Mia’s world is turned around when her estranged grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, informs Mia that she is the next heir of a small European country called Genovia, due to the passing of the King, Mia’s father. This is Mia’s call to adventure because this is an issue that only Mia can conquer. Clarisse tells Mia that the family throne is in danger if she doesn’t step up to the plate as the next heir. Mia’s mother convinces her to take princess lessons from her grandmother before the Genovia Independence Day Ball. Guiding Mia through princess lessons, Clarisse acts as her Supernatural aid, which is a mentor who prepares the hero for their journey by giving advice, knowledge, or a magic weapon. Mia’s grandmother brings her hairstylist, Paolo, to aesthetically transform her to a princess. While Mia is physically transforming into a princess, her Grandmother teaches her how she should carry herself in front of the Genovian government. Queen Clarisse’s bodyguard and limo driver, Joe, acts as Mia’s supernatural aid by assisting her with balancing her normal life and her royal life. When Mia felt like her best friend did not understand her new princess transformation, he gave her advice such as, “No one can make you feel inferior, without your consent”. He often helped reassure Mia when she felt pressured by her Grandmother’s princess rules. Once Mia has transfor
