Motivation and self management are the key elements which will help assist me throughout my studies. Management “is a process of achieving objectives through the effective use of resources.” (Cameron, Sheila (2005) p26 University of Greenwich Personal Professional Development 1-Managing your studies) According to Mullins (2007 p250) motivation is the driving force within individuals by which they attempt to achieve some goal. This essay will address how I will manage and motivate myself throughout year one of my degree. My previous studies helped me highlight my weaknesses, to overcome these I have decided to attend study skills classes. University consists of a large workload which requires one of my objectives to be self management. Therefore I must plan and prioritize my work smartly and realistically. I will make a list of upcoming assessments for the rest of the year. This will enable me to keep track of my work and pace myself. I will prevent myself from falling behind in my lessons and stop a back log of work by doing a small amount work done each day. In addition I will make good use of the resources available at the University i.e. journals. This will broaden my understanding tremendously. Time management is also important to me. I want to make sure I use my time to the fullest capacity whether at work or during group work. I also do not want to feel guilty whilst socialising. Maslow stated that time off is essential for you to maintain full effectiveness (Maslow 1943 cited by Cameron 2005 p41). My main reason of studying at university is to achieve a degree which will help me pursue a career of my dreams. In order to achieve a certain standard of living money will have to be a motive to me. I would also like to be appreciated and recognized for my hard work.
