Celie expresses herself in the first person through a sequence of secluded letters she writes to God and well along to Nettie. This novel being written in first person by the author creates the question “Was Alice Walker exposed to these events and cruelty herself as a child?”, “Could Celie be situated to play the role of Alice when she was a child?” Originally, Celie’s letters concentrate only on what she does, overhears, perceives, and feels. Over a period of time, they develop to include more complex themes and insights. The question that begins to formulate while reading this novel is “Was Alice abused as a child?” Celie has been raped and abused by her father and Mr.___. Alfonso has stated to her that she can speak of these problems to none except God. From the beginning of the novel, Celie is mistreated by her father and Mr.___. Short term: I predict Celie will run away or plan to kill her father Alfonso, because she dislikes the way he neglects and abuses her due to her vulnerability. After finishing my reading of this novel half of my prediction was correct, Celie does leave the house but she does not kill her father. In my opinion Celie is terrified of her father but does not respect him. I noticed the way she refers to him as “he” rather than “father or Alfonso” and how she gives Alfonso his way with her. This portrays to me that Alfonso takes advantage of his power over Celie to oppress her in every way. My long term prediction stood as: Celie would commit suicide when she is older. I made this assumption because Celie’s experiences will leave her with horrible memories throughout the rest of her life; in result of this she will take her life. I predict she will take this action not because she wants to, but because her childhood remembrances will destroy her mentally. There are many characters in this novel and most of the characters contribute to the growth of Celie. One character I ponder on is
