Social media is a growing thing and has definitely enhanced our communication in many ways, like Facebook and how it keeps people updated, and connecting with friends and family. Social media on the other hand has also diminished that face-to-face connection between two people. In my opinion social media is a great and wonderful invention that is very needed. I wouldn’t imagine my life without it, especially growing up with my dad working in Nigeria. Social media helped me to keep in contact with my dad like Skype and BBM, making me feel closer to him. Back in the day people living far away from each other didn’t have this advantage. Social media is very good in that way. It’s also very handy in the local community, like using Facebook, Twitter and BBM etc. By using these social media websites there are many advantages like meeting people and getting reminded about important days and events that they might not have known about otherwise, everything from church events to school closings are communicated via social media. Sadly social media has made people rely on social media for communication rather than face-to-face interaction, they are not developing the necessary social skills for real life situations. It makes people more vulnerable to social isolation. When you are online you feel protected by the screen and this enables you to say things to people that you wouldn’t normally say in person, whatever they want, whenever they want. This allows cyber bullying to take place, which is not a very good form of communication. Cell phones are seen everywhere and has become an obsession. We no longer want to go and visit a friend face to face we would rather just text over the phone. Even when friends go out, haven’t you noticed how many are sitting there at the table and their eyes are glued to their phones? On the other hand it does give us different ways of connecting.
