Religion is one of the most fascinating aspects of being human. The Catholic church was the only church during medieval times. And Christianity was the only religion in that era. Religion was an integral part of life. Laws were enforced by the church by which people were expected to live by. Punishment for going against the law was usually severe. Catholicism continued to reign until the reign of Henry VII. This is when the Church of England was born. Religious conflict in the Medieval era was very common. The Crusades which occurred in the 11th century are perhaps the most famous religious conflict of all times. The Crusades were Holy wars launched by the States of Europe against the Saracen a term used to describe Muslims during the time of the Crusades. The aim of the Crusades was to reclaim Christian territories that were in the hands of the Muslims. The City of Jerusalem held an important significance to both the Muslims and the Christians. “The crusades were tied to this effort as the Papacy advocated for war to regain the Holy land which had been under Muslims since 639' ( Sources, 202). As a reflection to religious awakening and Chivalry, there is a very strong relationship between the Awakening and the Crusades. Firstly, both fought for a common cause which was regaining Christianity back. In both, there was declaration of a holy war as a step of protecting Christianity by the Christians. Fighting for Jesus Christ is the main agenda. Following the fall of the Roman empire, Christianity, Islam and Judaism flourished and fought for control. The most interesting thing is that Christianity, Islam and Judaism had and still have a very strong relationship. Islam was the dominant religion of the Middle East.
