Assimilation is the process in which ones language and culture come to resemble another person’s. Many immigrants come into the United States and try to assimilate into the American culture but many fail because they got deported or whenever the legal system fails them they fall back on their old ways of justice like the opening scenes of The Godfather. It is hard to determine how far to assimilate you do not want to lose your heritage but you want to have every right just like any other citizen. In The Godfather and My New American Life the main characters Michael and Lula are trying to assimilate into America. Their journeys to become “American” are the same, and the fact that their journeys are going to be long and hard are the same but, they differ in the way the goal is reached or not reached. Michael from The Godfather is a second generation immigrant who came from a family who is rich from the family business, the mafia business. He is already an American citizen and an American veteran from World War 1. He is trying to assimilate into America from his Italian mafia roots, in which he wants out of the family business. To assimilate he was in the war and is currently trying to become a politician with the help the mafia’s connections. He is not assimilating well because he still talks his old language and he is still connected to his roots. He is dating an American girl named Kay and is constantly telling her that he wants out of the family business even though he needs their help to become a politician he is away with her when his father is shot multiple times. He decides to come back to care for his mother and ends up ruining his chances of assimilation when he kills the police chief and the man who set up the failed murder of his father, After this there are no chances of him assimilating.
