There is a myriad of reasons why the United States of America has yet to elect, or even nominate a female candidate for the country’s highest leadership position, presidency. The biggest reason I believe that we have not had a female in Presidency, is the fact that not very many females have held high ranking state, senate, house, or other government related positions. The majority of people who have been elected, especially recently, have had fairly lengthy careers, and held high ranking positions. In order for a qualified female to have a legitimate shot at being President, they must first hold other high level positions, and prove their worth just as their male counterparts do. Furthermore, in the 225 or so years, the United States has had a president, females have only had the right to vote for 90 of those years. Additionally, they have only held political offices for 40-50 years. With that being said, females holding political office, is relatively new in our country. In the span of 50 years, there has only been 13 elections. Working your way up in politics takes a significant time. It is very possible that there just hasn’t been enough elections and time, for a female to make a strong, successful run toward presidency. The media, especially in today’s day and age, doesn’t exactly help the chances of a lady being nominated for President. The media can be quite harsh in the way it criticizes and discusses all politicians. As we have seen with Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, female government figures are not exempt from constant ridicule. Fear of bashing from the media over past events, or poor reputations is something that keeps males and females from running for President. Even legislators with a clean slate and crystal clear reputations, are ridiculed within the media for things such as appearance, the way they act and talk, who they’re married to, and what they do in their free time. Another thing that holds female
