For the past few decades, it has been widely argued whether or not a college education is really worth the trouble of attending a prestigious university or local community college. For many individuals attending school is a privilege, but it is also a necessity. The youth of America are practically raised and conditioned to believe that they need to strive for a higher level of education in order to succeed in life. However, what gets less attention is the fact that not all college degrees or college-bound students are created equal. There is significant gap in the factors that determine the success of an individual. The field of study, whether or not a student graduates, even a student’s comprehensive abilities, are all crucial variables which factor into the equation of a person’s success. Sadly, even now, as technology advances and computers replace the need for a surplus human workforce, the question remains: is a college education really necessary? There are individuals who have never attended college and are financially more successful than other individuals; so why should students have to struggle under the crippling debt of student loans while they attend school? It might be easier to acquire a job to pay for a specialty school, eliminating the need for a lengthy and costly college experience. According to Danielle Allen, human beings need to foster their development along four dimensions: “They need to prepare themselves for bread-winning work; for civic and political engagement; for creative self-expression and world-making; and for rewarding relationships in spaces of intimacy and leisure” (456). Allen explains that this type of development, which is necessary for every individual, would be best honed in an educational environment. This way, one could explore different areas for self-improvement, while being exposed to various vocational opportunities along the way. However, going to college does not necessarily ens
