In “Violent Media is Good for Kids” by Gerard Jones, Jones stated that violent media has a positive effect on children. Jones uses his own experience with his son and some other’s to show and support that violence is a good thing for kids. The audience will be shown through various reasoning that violent media is not all bad for kids. In a personal approach to his audience Jones tells about his son who he allows him to watch violent shows and thus his son acting as some of the characters from the shows such as a dinosaur or a Power Ranger. Jones expressed that this was okay since his son is reenacting super heroes because when they are a super hero the children are able to identify their emotions as well the, “superhero stories help kids negotiate the conflicts between the inner self and the public self” ( Jones 10). Jones goes on to explain that from Melanie Moore a PhD in psychology she stated that, “’Children needs violent entertainment in order to explore the inescapable feelings that they’ve been taught to deny’." The downside to violent media being exposed to kids is that they are sometimes when the violence can be harmful and it can cause a serious problem such as Jones talks about in school shooting, Jones goes on explaining that some pop psychologists would say that “’pop culture’” needed to be taken away and some parents were much guilty in it, one of Jones’s friends said that, “’I’ve turned into the bad mom who lets her kids eat sugary cereal and watch cartoons!”’ . Jones doesn’t take that matter into something big as he states more benefits of violent media benefiting kids, the topic of emotions rise up again and Jones explain how with violence kids can express their emotions more and help with rage.
