Have you smiled lately? Some people might not be able to say yes. Studies show that one in eight adolescents are going through depression. Many feel as though they are alone, when truly, they’re not. Depression is something that needs to be taken head on. More people need to be aware of the issue and what stress it can cause on teens. It’s definitely not something that should have ‘exceptions’ to it. There are now songs raising awareness about teens being and feeling alone in the world. There’s also a lot of poems about depression and how it leads to death. Also, articles are piling up about teen suicide and there’s many that stand out from all the others. “Phoebe Prince’s lilting accent and wide smile made the fifteen year old freshman stand out at the South Hadley High School. Where she enrolled last fall after her family relocated from a tiny village in the west of Ireland.” (McCabe, p.1) This particular girl lived a normal life until she started getting teased at school for dating issues. Phoebe Prince was subjected to too much taunting and one night she just couldn’t take it anymore. She decided to commit suicide on January 14th, 2010 all because of kids at her school who would taunt her and make her feel horrible about herself. The teens at Phoebe Prince’s school were given a lecture about what bullying can do to someone, but no names were used during the lecture. Depression can take someone over and make them think that suicide is the only answer to all their problems. It can make them feel as if they are completely alone in the world and that they have no one to talk to. “I don’t want to be left/ In this war tonight/ Am I alone in this fight/ Is anybody out there?/ Don’t wanna be left, left in this world behind/ Say you’ll run to my side.” (K’aan, line 1-6) Feeling alone and needing someone to talk to are some of the things that people with depression go through.
