Themes of The Great Gatsby

Thought out the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott we see many different symbols being used that represent a lot of different themes. But all of the symbol and theme lead back to one big theme which was The American Dream. Fitzgerald use symbolism to demonstrate the theme of the american in The Great Gatsby by using the green light and Daisy. The first symbol we in The Great Gatsby is the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. To Gatsby the green light represents his dream, which Daisy is a part of. To attain her would be completing Gatsbys American Dream. When we are first introduced to the green light Nick is watching Gatsby reaching out for the green light. “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling...that might have been the end of dock.” (Fitzgerald, 21-22) In this the green light was ‘minute and far away’ and Gatsby is reaching for it and it makes it seem as if the green light or his dream is very far away and that it is almost impossible to reach it. But throughout the book we see Gatsby with alot of hope and always trying. But then we also always get a sense that Gatsbys American Dream was a lot further away then he thought it was. Later, after Daisy and Gatsby's reunion, a mist covers the green light. Nick observes, "Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever....Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one" (98). This quote show how Gatsby also realizes that him and Daisy might not work out. During this part of the story we again get the sense that Gatsby's dream might not completely come true because Daisy was a vital part of it and the fact that the light got covered by the mist hints that.
