Women should not be treated like birth machines, or like an object to obtain a profit. A surrogate is, “A woman who becomes pregnant usually by artificial insemination or surgical implantation of a fertilized egg for the purpose of carrying the fetus to term for another woman” (Merriam Webster). According to the statistics of the reporter Rosemarie Tong, “about 1,500 to 2,000 surrogate/contracted babies are born per annum in the United States,” caused by commercial surrogacy. These commercial industries oppress and exploit women around the world, and it can affect the birthmothers during the process of surrogacy. The emotional damage society puts into surrogates is unethical, they make them pass a cruel process. According to the story for CNN, “Surrogate offered $10,000 to abort baby,” by Elizabeth Cohen. A women, Crystal Keller, at 29 was offered $10,000 to have an abortion after an ultrasound; and it revealed the baby suffered from several medical diseases, and their biological parents did not want the baby anymore. When they realized that the baby was unhealthy, the parents wanted to consider not going along with the pregnancy, but Crystal told them that she was going to protect the baby no matter how hard it would be. The birthmother had to move to another country to have the legal rights of the baby, and during the painful process she gave the baby to a family willing to take care of her. Think about the emotional damage people cause in the surrogates, they bond with the baby they carried for 9 months, and what happened when the parents do not want the baby, just because is not perfect. They cannot play like God, and decide not to have the baby; that is just unfair. These surrogacy industries are only experiments, to create babies to make someone else happy, not knowing how in the future the baby is going to develop in our society.
