Legal consciousness has a wide range of meanings, however I believe there is there is no exact definition to grasp the whole concept of legal consciousness. Legal Consciousness is a part of everyday life as it encounters the law, which most of us obey, even if we don’t agree with it to avoid the penalties and to maintain a steady society. It has an effect, upon our lives as it shapes how we think, behave and interact with other people. However due to my own experiences with the law, I have formed my own views, that will not be the same as others therefore, legal consciousness can be subjective interpretation. In my view, the law and legal system are like guidelines that are enforceable in order to prevent total anarchy and sustain a functional society, enabling individuals to possess equal rights as well as having responsibilities, which make us apart of the social order. Society values and attitudes continue to change, such as the view on de-facto relationships, gender related issues and the constant changing of technology, and therefore more laws should be created, updated or changed, to keep consistent with the people’s morals. Our laws state that we are ‘innocent, until proven guilty’, therefore I believe that defendant in court shouldn’t immediately be titled as a ‘criminal’ or be treated like one until both sides of the arguments have been presented in order to gather the evidence and form a verdict. I am still a fairly new driver on the Vic-roads, hence on my probationary license, which I am required to follow strict rules.
