In the Learning Race, by Kaela Hobby-Reichstein, we see the authors experience about learning race. In another essay, “The Most Annoying Facebookers,” by Brandon Griggs, we learn about annoying facebookers. From this we learn how our personal relationships are re-defined because of technology. Both essays talk about important issues that we all have to learn to live with. In the essay Learning Race, by Kaela Hobby-Reichstein, we learn what Hobby-Reichstein experienced in kindergarten. This was her first time learning about what race was. It started as a normal day in kindergarten until her teacher asked the kids to paint a picture of their family. Kaela painted herself and her mother peach skin. Then next to that, she painted her fat5her and half-brother brown because their skin was a little darker than her skin was. Kaela’s friend Ryan also painted of her family. She and her mother were painted brown, but her father and stepfather had lighter skin, so they were painted peach. The children finished painting, and they saw nothing wrong with the paintings. The teacher Ms. Oakleaf had met Kaela’s family and she had informed Kaela that her picture was wrong. She would not explain why it was wrong, but she just said that she had to talk to her parents. After both children grew up, they both experienced racism. At around the fourth grade, Kamela and Ryan were going for dinner at Ryan’s grandmother’s house. The father was driving and the kids saw other children playing around the fire hydrant and cooling down. The father pulled the car over and the kids ran toward the fire hydrant. As they did, the other children were shouting racist comments and told them to leave. Kamela was feeling hatred and hurt. Prior to this incident, Kamela never really found any difference in race until she went to another neighborhood.
