For most of his life he lived during the Edo period (1603-1868).The Edo period or Tokugawa period was ruled by Tokugawa Leyasu is when Japanese society was put into political stability, peace and economic growth under the shogunate. From the 12th century to the 17th century japan was ruled by samurai but was politically unstable. Finally, Tokugawa Leyasu fought the battle of Sekigahara and defeated the Hideyori loyalists and other Western rivals. Tokugawa established new government in edo and became the first shogun of the edo period in 1603.Tokugawa kept strict control of the country and distributed land between the daimyos. Leyasu promoted foreign trade with the English and the Dutch and enforced the suppression of Christianity. Life story of Miyamoto Musashi Born in Miyamoto-Sanoma on 1584, Miyamoto Musashi was known as one the greatest warriors ever to live. He was a wild child and had a knack for causing trouble. Musashi had his first duel at the age of thirteen. He challenged a professionally trained samurai Arima Kihei. Musashi only used a wooden sword and kihei had a razor sharp sword. Musashi beat him to death. When Musashi was fifteen he had left his village on a warrior pilgrimage and fought again against a strong samurai called Akiyama. The quickly ended after he killed Akiyama. He travelled to Kyoto to test his skills against the best swordsmen in the land, Yoshioka Seijuro, Miyamoto was the master of strategy. To beat his opponents he would use psychological warfare, He intentionally arrived late to agitate yoshioka and was repeatedly insulted by yoshioka. They decided to fight with wooden swords and only give one hit. He left yoshioka crippled in the left arm. At twenty-eight years old he fought one of the most famous battles in Japanese history against a famous and powerful samurai called Sasaki Kojiro.
