In our "Black Female Identity Through Time" class, we watched a documentary called Building Bridges: The Untold African Story. It was made in 2012 by Dr. Rose Sackeyfio. The purpose of this film was to balance out the different perspectives on African culture. The film takes place in Ghana where Dr. Sackeyfio talks to different people about how they feel about the “single stories” being portrayed of African culture. These people included students, professors, and Samia Nkrumah, the daughter of the first president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah. This documentary breaks many of the stereotypes related to Africa. Some of the topics that resonated with me were the misconceptions of Africa and when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Richard Nixon met. Many people in the African diaspora believe the common misconceptions of Africa. One of the most common ones is that Africa is one huge country. Africa however, is a continent with fifty-four independent countries. Each country has their own culture, as well as their own social, economic, and political structure. Another myth is that Africa is underdeveloped and a big mass of desert with wild animals roaming all over. Ghana, for example, is a developed country and has a plentiful amount of modern architecture and infrastructure. This includes the Parliament building, many universities, and skyscrapers. Also, another common misconception is that all of Africa is famished and poor. This is also not true. According to the film, the middle classes of the different countries in Africa are as cosmopolitan and flourishing as anywhere else in the world. Breaking these misconceptions is vital because many people live their whole life believing these myths and miss out on learning about the true essence of African cultures. The eye-opener for me in Building Bridges: The Untold African Story was when Samia Nkrumah discussed the independence of Ghana. Ghana finally gained their independence in 1957.
