a. Using examples, briefly describe some of the challenges and interesting discoveries Bruce Knauft discusses in the text. The first challenge that had to be overcome was language. Since neither Bruce nor the Gebusi could communicate verbally, they had to communicate by gestures and pointing. But the fact that Bruce was trying to learn their language was appreciated. “That we were already trying to speak their language-however haltingly-was widely and enthusiastically noted. That we ate local food and that I had somehow carried my own backpack, which the men enjoyed trying on, were also taken as a positive sign” (pg.16). One of the coolest discoveries was a word “Kogwayay.” Their language is based on what is called morphemes, taking three words with meaning and combining them to create a whole new word. Kog means togetherness, wa means friendship, and yay means similarity. Bruce said this word best sums up Gebusi culture. it is their “beliefs, practice and styles of living that are special and unique to Gebusi as a people” (pg.17). He then goes on to say that the Gebusi believe this word to mean a catchall marker of cultural distinction rather than a tool for dissecting it. b. Many of the challenges Knauft faces are unique to his field site in Papua New Guinea. From what you read, what kinds of general skills do you think anthropologists need to have to do their work wherever that might be? Necessary skills would include the ability to adapt, the ability to just follow people without interfering with their day to day lives, and also (this might sound weird) a strong stomach. First, the ability to adapt. What do I mean by this? To do your study properly as an anthropologist, you must have a “go with the flow” kind of attitude. The people group you might be studying will never allow your study to go according to plan. They will either want to take you to another village, have you participate in certain rituals, or maybe even they might try to understand you before allowing you to really get to k
