The Civil Rights movement was a very big theme between the years 1954-1968. There were many different themes that occurred. Education during the movement was one of the highlighted themes and played an important role. The movement started with Rosa parks refusing to not sit in the back of the bus and ended with the March on Washington and the assignation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Due to the Jim Crow Laws Life in the south for African Americans was horrific and torturous. One of the most documented parts of the Civil Rights Movement was the Supreme Court case called Brown Vs. Board of education. This case dealt with segregation in public schools across the United States. Before 1954 most public schools did not incorporate both black and white students. This was because of the Jim Crow Laws; these laws also segregated blacks from parks, movie theaters, stadiums and many more places. This decision by the Supreme Court started the fight for African Americans to get more rights and end segregation. The Supreme Court’s ruling was that: blacks and whites segregated in public schools went against the fourteenth amendment of the United States constitution. Thurgood Marshall was a key individual in the case and really influenced the other judges that what they were doing was wrong. He famously was the first African American justice that served on the Supreme Court and helped the Blacks gain many rights.
