Teenage pregnancies are a prevalent issue in South Africa. The department of basic education has recorded 20 000 learners’ pregnancies last year with the ministry saying 717of those came from primary schools. What do you think are the factors driving teenage pregnancy? What do you think can be done to decrease the number of learner pregnancy. South Africa is a democratic country; we have a variation of cultures with different practices. One solution will not merely apply everywhere; there has to be a serious solution with different tactics in order for it to work. First of all young people/learners cannot be blamed directly, due to the fact that they are still in the early ages of life. Proper guardianship and mentorship is vital from early age of an infant. The societies we live in now are most affected by the environment we live in. According to the law, alcohol is not allowed to be sold to anyone under the age of 18, but we still see young people in townships still being involved with tragic things due to the influence of alcohol. When a tavern is allowing young people to buy alcohol it serves as a primary source that is causing teenage pregnancy. Greediness and ambition to acquired temporary status drives young people to organize events that includes drinking competition between boys trying to impress these young mothers, The ability to control young girls under the influence of alcohol is what many men desire in our society. Therefore it is very easy for someone who has money to impregnate a school girl. Lack of information and guidance at home or in schools is a second driving factor that is causing them make bad decisions. Most of the parents do not teach their children about such issues. If a child’s view about sex is undermined she is likely to fall pregnant at a young age.
