Advice for Successful Relationships

Thank you for coming to me looking for advice. I just want to say in no way am I a professional in this topic, but after taking my recent communications class I feel that I am coming to a much better understanding of communication as a whole. My advice to you for a successful relationship is to be able to communicate effectively. The importance of communication may seem like something that is common knowledge to most, but in reality not all of us are good with communicating. Communication can very from different cultures and even genders, which is why it is important for us to learn how to interpret the different ways we can communicate with one another. When thinking of what advice I should give you, the word communication just kept ringing over and over in my head. I decided that is where I start. The world communication is described as “the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else” (Communication) These meanings are the goals of improving interpersonal communication. As a couple, it is important to be able to do all the above meanings. People have desires to be able to connect, participate, and share with others. Interpersonal communication cannot be avoided. Interpersonal communication is the exchange of messages between two people to create shared meaning (Sole, 2011). Effective interpersonal communication is shared meaning where all individuals involved come to a mutual understanding in the exchange of words or gestures. While the topics may be the typical of what you would expect, it doesn't make them any less important. In this paper I will discuss why when it comes to communication it is important to understand how perceptions, emotions, and non verbal expression affect our interpersonal relationships, how appropriate levels of self-disclosure will benefit our relationships, discuss strategies for managing interpersonal conflicts is important, how emotional intelligence is a big role in effective interpersonal relationships, and lastly the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal relationships. We all know that men and woman communicate in different ways, but effectively using interpersonal communication in a relationship requires an understanding of the other persons perceptions, emotions, and the nonverbal expressions. It is also essential to be able to describe strategies for managing interpersonal conflicts. Communication between husband and wife involves expectations, and problems will begin to occur when people behave in ways that are inconsistent with the relationship. “It is widely believed that certain emotions are universally recognized in facial expressions. Evidence indicates that Western perceptions (e.g., scowls as anger) depend on cues to U.S. emotion concepts embedded in experiments.
