Social media is becoming one of the most pertinent aspects of our society. The social media we all know has been around for a while now and has gained much popularity worldwide. Now a days, social media has grown from something individuals use to connect with their friends, but an empire for businesses to expand and can no longer be ignored for business owners. The one question that remains on business leaders mind is that if their presence on social media is actually helping to expand their business and ultimately make them more money. In older business’s that have been around for a while, they don’t understand the true importance of social media or even how it really works. Armstrong, Brown and Riley believe that “It is essential to motivate and enlighten staff on the importance of social media in increasing organizational productivity (Armstrong, Brown & Reilley, 2011)”. Social medias expansion over the last decade is continuing to grow and we as consumers are seeing businesses using it not only to market themselves, but also to enhance their relationships with costumers and employees. A real life example of how social media can help a business that has been around for years and isn’t quite sure how to utilize it is a company that I had an opportunity working for, Lincoln Technical Institutes. Before just a small suggestion of mine, LTI was struggling to raise admission rates. During a bi-monthly meeting I suggested to come up with a social media platform to help this problem. When I returned in the fall, I was told that a whole new marketing team had been hired and my idea would take affect in the near future. Lincoln Tech along with businesses throughout the world are in the process of adapting to social networking trends to not only give them advantage with other competitors, but to help benefit there appearance.
